Schuylkill County Prepares for America250PA Kickoff on January 18

Schuylkill County is set to host its local kickoff event for the America250PA initiative on January 18, 2025. This celebration marks the beginning of a series of events commemorating the United States’ 250th anniversary. The county commissioners announced that the event will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Schuylkill County Courthouse, featuring remarks from state and local officials, as well as presentations from various organizations, including the Schuylkill County Historical Society.

During the announcement, Commissioner Gary Hess emphasized the historical significance of Schuylkill County, particularly its role during the Industrial Revolution and the importance of anthracite coal to the region’s development. “Always remember that Schuylkill County was very important because of the Industrial Revolution,” he stated. “If it wasn’t for anthracite coal, a lot of things would not be here today.”

Year-Long Celebrations Planned

The America250PA initiative will kick off with a two-week tour across all 67 counties in Pennsylvania, beginning in Philadelphia. Schuylkill County plans to host a variety of events throughout the year, including a parade, fireworks, and concerts, all aimed at engaging the community and celebrating the county’s heritage.

Chairman Larry Padora expressed his hope that all municipalities in Schuylkill County will participate in the upcoming festivities. He highlighted the county’s contributions to anthracite coal production and its broader historical significance, stating that the America250PA efforts provide an excellent opportunity to reflect on this heritage.

According to a news release, America250PA aims to connect individuals of all ages with the history, innovation, and shared heritage that have shaped Pennsylvania and the nation. “This celebration is for everyone in our community, to reflect on our past and to spark excitement for the future,” Hess added. “We welcome all residents and visitors to be part of this historic kick-off.”
